This is a history of nursing in Vermont, a project begun by the Vermont State Nurses’ Association in 1931 and finished ten years later with the assistance of many in the association. Illustrated with photographs, including Abbie Starkey at the Vermont State Nurses’ Association headquarters, Nellie Gray Barnes, the first graduate nurse from Mary Fletcher Hospital, an operating room scene at Mary Fletcher Hospital in 1894, Sister Collins, the Superintendent of Fanny Allen Hospital from 1915 to 1924, Ada M. Stewart, the first industrial nurse in the United States, and others. The book discusses the history of the Mary Fletcher and Fanny Allen Hospitals, and the nursing graduates of those hospitals, as well as the formation of the Association and its efforts at the statehouse. Vermont public health is also explored, as nurses worked with granite and marble quarry workers, employees of paper companies, and other at-risk populations throughout the state.
